6th Annual Milwaukee Short Film Festival

6TH MILWAUKEE SHORT FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES THE WINNERS

Old Skool Productions, Dirty Job Films and local filmmaker Ross Bigley are proud to announce the award-winning films of the Milwaukee Short Film Festival, held June 6, at the Times Cinema, 5906 W. Vilet St.

The $1,000 grand prize for Best Film of the evening was presented to Eric Gerber for "Aldara." Second place, Honorary Mention, was a tie between Howie Goldklang's "God Knows Your Lonely Soul" and Ryan Dillon's "Good Morning." Mariko Ujihisa took home Artistic Achievement for her film "Louis and Me."

Jeff Fitzsimmons won Special Artistic Vision for two works, "Pre" and "Drift." Dawn Youngs and Jeremy Zeman won Honorary Mention for Acting in "Good Morning."

A special Audience Award was also given out by the crowd to Carlo Besasie for "Wishtaker."

The Milwaukee Short Film Festival would like to thank all the filmmakers and sponsors again for making this event an outstanding success. And to Felix Bofil for hosting the evening.

The Grocery
by Karen Lindholm Rynkiewicz
Running time: 6 min.

Synopsis:
A story about the power of love. While grocery shopping, an older drifts into romantic memory. Soon, the whole store is swept up in a dancing fantasy.

Biography:
Karen Lindholm- Rynkiewcz is a filmmaker and high school teacher. Her film, Portrait of a Dog, was screened at the Rosebud Cinema in Wauwatosa. Her short film, Evie's Bag, can be seen on line at www.ismfilms.com



Der Wald (The Woods)
by Erin McCann
Running time: 4:32 min.

Synopsis:
A young lad, disheartened by the metorpolis in which he lives, escapes to the woods. He is given sanctuary until he breaks a promise, enabling horror to ensue; a tragic ending to a tragic tale.

Biography:
Graduated from UWM with a BA in film studies in 2002, Erin enjoys filmmaking of any kind, but is attracted to animation for the pure joy of creation.



ALDARA
by Eric Gerber
Running time: 4 min.

Synopsis:
touching an infected person's lesions can transmit cells containing the virus. Only total absence of any contact with infected tissue will avoid transmission.

Biography:
Eric is a film student at UWM, he has shown work in our 4th and 5th festival. He also has another film in the festival entitled What Remains.



God Knows Your Lonely Soul

Biography:
Howie Goldklang is a filmmaker rooted in the tradition of silent film and music video. In 2004 he founded the Milwaukee based music video company, Establishment Productions.



Pre

Synopsis:
Timing is everything.

Biography:
Jeff attended college at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire and the Evergreen Collage in Washington State, studying photography and film. After college, he worked in the film industry in nearly every postition from Peon to Assistant Director. Jeff won the grand prize in the 5th festival with his film Gaucer. He also has the film Drift in this festival and appears in another entitled Leavings by Dan Wilson.



Wishtaker

Synopsis:
Many different people toss coins into a foutain, hoping to change their unpleasent situations, but a homless man often removes the coins, interfering with their destinies. Starring Mark Metcalf (National Lampoon's Animal House, Seinfeld) and Suzanne Grazanna (West Wing, One Hour Photo).

Biography:
Carlo Besasie completed his film degree at the UWM, graduating with honors in 1993. He is currently in preproduction on his first feature film.



Louis & Me

Synopsis:
Obsession leads to self-destruction. What happens when a wife is obsessed with a lifeless handbag and the husband gets jealous? This film shows the extremes of today's overzealous consumerism with name brand culture.

Biography:
Mariko had a film in the last festival, and won an honorary award for acting in Dreams of America.

IN the WORKS
by Michael Moynihan
Running time: 3 min

Synopsis:
A video sketchbook of notes and ideas of three projects now being worked on and created by playwright/director/video maker Michael Moynihan. The final results may end up on stage or screen or perhaps both. The three segments are: 1) A documentary about Musician, Fire Performer, Body Artist and Photographer Sandy Jungwirth. 2) An experimental animation entitled Panic Attack or Panic Disorder. 3) Free on the www: Staire. Consists of satirical content appropriated (that is, stolen) from various places on the www. People send me such things. Presently in very early stages of development/structuring.

Damned

Synopsis:
Based on a Czech myth of a water spirit that haunts Czech rivers, this short classic horror film traces the first and last shift of Josef Svarec, a river maintenance worker who despite several ominous warnings is seduced by a mysterious woman.

Biography:
Jeff Becker is a recently returned Milwaukee native. Graduating from the George Washington Univeristy in Washington, DC with a major in Electronic media, Jeff attended a semester program at FAMU, the Czech film school in Prague, Czech Republic during the fall of 2002.



Medusa

Synopsis:
A girl turns into a monster.

Biography:
Lilly is currently a film student at UWM. Aside from making films, she enjoys writing music and performing in her band.



Leavings

Valerie

Synopsis:
Valerie Lewis, a 19 year old college student is obsessed with an ex-boyfriend. She places an unhealthy importance on her appearance and social life, these mistakes take a toll in a shocking ending.

Biography:
After editing low budget television commercials for an NDC station in Rhinelander, George enrolled as a Radio, television, film major at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh three years ago. Valerie is his first attempt with narrative film.



Reclaimed Treasure

Synopsis:
This is a documentary telling the story of the Silver Falls region of Oregon. It is a classic story of man versus nature. Silver Falls goes from a pristine old-growth forest to a stumpy wasteland and back before finally gaining protected status as a state park. Winner of Northwest Regional Emmy for Outstanding Student Work in 2003.

Biography:
J.J. Burkart grew up in Plymouth, WI on Crystal Lake. He studied film at UW Ð Madison before the vast landscapes of Oregon beckoned him. While finishing his undergraduate Journalism degree, he took a documentary filmmaking class and decided on a project that drew upon his love for nature.



Good Morning

Synopsis:
During the winter in a small, dirty, blue-collar town. Philip, an owner of a men's tailoring shop, who lives alone and centers his life around the work he doesnÕt much care for, exits a bar looking for a woman to ease his immediate concerns of loneliness and sexual frustration.

Biography:
Ryan was born and raised in Milwaukee, WI and has a BA from Columbia College Chicago in film and video. Currently Ryan is living in Milwaukee, while working on writing several features, as well as wrapping up a short script with the plan of filming it this fall in Chicago and Milwaukee.



What Remains

Synopsis:
A glimpse inside a man's fascination with preserving the remains of insects.

Biography:
Eric Gerber is a junior at UWM, he has shown work in the 4th and 5th festival. He also has the film ALDARA in this festival.



mind plasma!
by Andrew Rosas
Running time: 15 min.

Synopsis:
Part comedy, drama, and deceptively funny-yet-serious strip-mall philosophy, mind plasma! follows performance artist TJ Richter through a series of brain-wave bending interviews and screaming daydreaming performances climaxing in a low-budget low-brow Greek tragedy surprise ending.

Biography:
Andrew is a 23 year old undergraduate student studying film at UWM. He works in both 16mm film and digital video in a variety of genres including narrative, experimental and documentary. He is currently an intern for the local production of the documentary Almost Heaven, intending to air nationally on PBS in late 2005.



Drift

Disembodied
by Ross Bigley

An advanced look at a feature film now in production. Starring Mariko, John Van Slyke, Stacie Williams, Kid Beat box, Chantel Harpole, Robert W.C. Kennedy, Michael Weber, Michael Moynihan, Felix Bofil, Dave Steward, Megan OÕ Donnell and Bo Sefus.

Biography:
Ross Bigley is a local filmmaker with over thirty productions to his credit as a writer/ producer and director. Disembodied is his first feature film, it is currently in production with shooting scheduled to end June 20th. Following that he'll immediately start shooting his second feature in Milwaukee, New York and Los Angeles, a crime drama titled Sore Losers.

Lincoln Nelsen got his start fours years ago when a small multi media production company fell into his lap. With complete creative freedom , he was soon making decisions that would help one of the smallest and most technologically advanced production houses in Wisconsin gain exposure and strengthen it's body of work. He currently freelances around the Midwest constantly looking to create art that moves emotions
